Faan se trein (movie review)

One can no longer say that a film like Faan se trein is good for “an Afrikaans film”. There are simply too many incredible Afrikaans and South African films available. Thus I have to judge Faan se trein according to international (and South African) standards. It felt like a play and not a movie. It was overacted. The music and the calendar-type shots of the landscape were soppy. And apologies to Willie, but he didn’t break out of the pigeonhole he has created for himself as an actor – I did not…See More

Winter in Europe

The wife was awarded a residency in Germany over the December holidays. Everyone shivered at the thought of winter in Europe, but we braved it. Yes, it was a little cold, but it had a beauty of its own. Plus, there were no hordes of silly tourists. Bonus.First stop, the Wanas Sculpture Park in Sweden. Jaw dropping stuff, I tell you. Apart from the 'smallish palace', there was sculptures by world renowned artists ‘strewn’ throughout a Hans…See More

Bookslive article about my book launch in Cape Town

The vibrant colours and energy that suffused the air on a recent early summer’s evening madeBibliophilia the perfect spot for the launch of Réney Warrington‘s debut novel in English, October. This small independent bookshop, with its focus on books on…See More

Cape Town Roller Girls

I stumbled upon roller derby through my sister-in-law. She’s way cool. She cycled from New Orleans to New York, named her firstborn son Eland and she does flat track roller derby! I see most of you frowning, asking what is flat track roller derby? Well, from what I saw it’s hot chicks on wheels bulleting towards one another! Okay, okay, let me rephrase. It’s hot chicks with cool derby names, all dressed up, made up in war paint, covered in protective gear, bulleting towards one another! On a…See More

Blue is the warmest colour REVIEW

Written for and published by www.litnet.co.zaThere is a lot of controversy surrounding the production of this film – and the root of it all is present in the film itself.Lea Seydoux, one of the leads, said she felt “like a prostitute” during filming. "The director has all the power. When you’re an actor on a film in France and you sign the contract, you have to give yourself, and in a way you’re trapped." Seydoux did not attend the New York premiere. The…See More

Book Beer Party in Joburg

Sunday, 27 October, 11am!I've done the lecture halls, the interviews, the festivals and the book stores. (And was left feeling rather traumatised!) This time around I'm having a party. So I've joined forces with artisan brewery, Smack! Republic, to launch the English translation of my novel. In other words, I will be selling books, and they'll be selling beer! Doesn't that just sound perfect? Rock up.…See More

Anna Calvi: One breath - I suspect we are faced with genius here

Written for and published first by www.litnet.co.zaOne can easily recognise a Calvi track. That carefully controlled, yet sweeping voice undoubtedly does stand out and, yes, it sounds like the voice she set out to create behind the closed curtains of her parents’ house – it is a strange blend between Nina Simone, Piaf and Netrebko. Her astounding guitar skills are reminiscent of the kinda stuff created by the great Belgian muso Django Reinhardt. (Anna still…See More
