south african pop culture community

One small seed is focused on popular culture and the creative disciplines that informs this culture... But what IS pop culture? How do we decide if something is popular or not - how big must a group who loves something be, before the thing is considered pop culture? Are only celebrity-related, media-published people, artwork and ideas worthy to be included in pop culture? Or is it a general mindset and innovation that sets it apart from other 'cultures'?

What is popular culture?

Nice Russ - it's almost poetic... And very expressive and graphic in its description. Thanks for your input!

Hmmm....It is tricky isn't it?
Artists, photographers, music.... it's all part of this thing we call 'pop culture'
Then on one hand we have 'pop art' and 'pop music' - genres which are pretty easy to recognise. But why then would we classify Britney Spears and Eminem as 'pop culture' ? They're both vastly different sorts of music (if not equally bland) and yet they exist beneath the same header.

To me pop culture is not only about what's popular, but about what creates dialogue with other parts of popular culture. So works of culture jamming, Banksy, Ron English - they all enter into dialogue with things that are defined as part of whats popular (technology, advertising etc). I guess 'pop culture' is also defined by what's current, what's currently 'in fad'.

hmmm this response isn't terribly coherent, i'll have a cuppa coffee and get back to you.

The Jonas Brothers are popular . . .
I'd say pop culture is , as Russel said, like the gum below a desk in your classroom. . .
It's something we see everywhere, it's the "in" thing and you're considered cool to those who indulge in the norm if you join in on it

It's like Marlboro, like Madonna, like Marilyn and Mona Lisa . . . like big hair in the 80s, tye-dye in the 60s, shredded jeans in the 90s

It's what attracts the average

Awesome, thanks for the comment. What I realised though, is that everything you mentioned is American - so how much of our local pop culture do you think is original and 'ours' instead of something we copy from American pop culture?
