Notes:

A great soundtrack moment makes it impossible to separate song and scene, or even to remember the song or imagine the scene without the other.

This list is based purely on preference, and exhibits several problems:

First, it excludes musicals, replete though they are with a host of memorable musical moments. This criterion might also exclude films like The Graduate, The Mission and The Godfather… as they feature music written specifically for the screen.

Secondly, each movie only gets to add one song to the list. This means that films like, say, Reservoir Dogs get a mention for Stuck in the Middle but clearly deserves another for Little Green Bag, or Full Metal Jacket’s fantastic use of Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots are Made for Walking is omitted.

Thirdly, it's in no order.

Any help polishing this list would be appreciated, a similar litany of great television soundtrack moments seems the next logical step. Any suggestions?

Definately include some Yann Tiersen's Amelie soundtrack. Here:
And from The Piano, amazing Michael Nyman:
Friday Night Lights, Explosions in the Sky:
There's no Ennio Morricone in your list or Craig Armstrong or Phillip Glass... these are all talented contemporary composers worth looking into if you want your emotions to run wild.
