The third Johannesburg International Mozart Festival will once again create an atmosphere for immersing in musical excellence from 23 January – 9 February 2010, exploring Musical Hemispheres as a theme.
Originally organized in 2006 in commemoration of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 250th birthday anniversary, the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival has developed into a highly successful and well-loved classical music event, with conductor Richard Cock at the helm as Music Director, together with concert pianist Florian Uhlig as Artistic Director.
Music lovers can look forward to symphony, chamber and solo concerts, with performances by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, the Imperial College Symphony Orchestra, musicians from the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and soloists that include Sibongile Khumalo (mezzo-soprano), Dietrich Henschel (baritone), Lone Madsen (clarinet) and Lidia Baich (violin). There are also various outreach and development concerts planned, since it is the Festival’s desire to invite people of all backgrounds and ages to join in and be united in the enjoyment and celebration of music.
Audiences will particularly enjoy the more informal character of festival music-making. 'It is the ambition of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival to reflect upon Mozart's genius and ingenuity and to create a setting that might translate at least some of Mozart's truly inspiring characteristics into the twenty-first century,' said Uhlig.
The Johannesburg International Mozart Festival provides a unique combination of classical performances on the highest international level with a keenly intelligent and creative approach to programming, together with an enterprising portfolio of all-encompassing education and outreach projects for children, students and audiences from all corners of society.
Cost: Tickets for the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival will be available through Computicket, and range between R80 and R165 per event.
